Title:  Progresses of bio-based flame retardant cotton fabrics and their potential applications in a smart grid
Abstract:
For a smart electric grid, wind turbine nacelles and blades are frequently caught in uncontrollable fires and also probably lead to ground fires; high-voltage overhead transmission lines and towers are frequently tripped by large scale wildfires and can also lead to below wildfires with various fire intensities. In this sense, it is very important and urgent to perform advanced flame retardant designs, develop fire proof coatings and composites for such segments. In view of the advantages of biomass or bio-based substances, they are superior flame retardant candidates in formulations for above flame retardant or fire proof systems. Based on all above, firstly, preparation methods and processes for flame retardant systems are reviewed, especially sol-gel and layer-by-layer assembly processes are addressed. Secondly, biomass or bio-based substances used for flame retardants mainly including carbonhydrate, protein, lipid and phenolic categories are summarized. Also, their advantages, disadvantages, application criteria/strategies/solutions/industrialization potentials, flame retardant mechanisms are analyzed. Thirdly, research progresses of our previous successful bio-based flame retardant cotton fabrics are displayed and referred to. Finally, prospects of using bio-based flame retardants in special fields like wind power generation and high-voltage power transmission segments are forecasted.
Biography:
Dr., Prof. Fei You has hosted more than 70 projects with national and provincial levels. He has been authorized and accepted over 20 domestic and foreign invention and utility model patents (including China, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, etc.). He has published more than 130 papers (over 80 are SCI and EI indexed) in journals such as Journal of the American Ceramic Society, Cellulose, Polymer Degradation and Stability, Journal of Industrial Textiles, and other top journals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in sub categories 1 and 2. He has served as a reviewer for over 20 domestic and foreign journals, such as Journal of Industrial Textiles, Nanotechnology Reviews, Advances in Polymer Technology, Journal of Composite Materials. He has participated in compiling and reviewed over 10 group and local standards of China. He is the chief editor and co-editor of over 10 textbooks and works. He has won the second prize of the 2022 China Invention Association Entrepreneurship Award-Innovation Award (ranking 1/6), etc. He has participated in more than 90 domestic and international academic conferences, served as a plenary or keynote speaker, host, chairman, and secretary-general, etc. He has visited more than 10 academic institutions in Hong Kong, Macao, the United States, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Australia, for exchange visits and special invited presentations. He also has provided technical and social services for more than 80 high-tech and characteristic enterprises.
